A telling of the 1st Battalion, 7 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division's battle against overwhelming odds in the La Drang valley of Vietnam in 1965. Seen through the eyes of the battalion's commander, Lt. Col. Hal Moore (played by Mel Gibson), we see him take command of the battalion and its preparations to go into Vietnam. We also see how the French had, years earlier, been defeated in the same area. The battle was to be the first major engagement between US and NVA forces in Vietnam and showed the use of helicopters as mobility providers and assault support aircraft.

I didn't expect a Christmas movie. All styles have been made and it's a challenge to make something different I guess. Once again here, James Franco is ambiguously gay. The lair of Laird is a magical world (Elon Musk cameo, btw) and it's very strange how we feel after the family returns home. But then Laird shows up by helicopter, and two surviving members of Kiss. It get strange again. Funny to have Kiss lead play the triangle while they sign a plain song. Conclusion: if you can stand Homer-sexual references, potty jokes and potty mouthing in a film, you can make it through mildly amused, but mostly intrigued by what's next.

Along the same lines as the movie Son-in-Law, but without the annoying antics of Pauly Shore(yes I liked it when it came out). It's really hard for a modern day comedy to make me laugh because a lot of them are just horribly written, have the same usual tired endings and the comedians usually suck in them. This wasn't true of this, at least for me. James Franco is hilarious and very likable, as well as Bryan Cranston is as the serious father type. Of course not all the jokes are home runs, but more of them hit than miss. Zoey Deutch is friggin' cute, and Keegan-Michael Key is great in a supporting role here too.

The old father-vs-fiance premise is tackled again with a below-average-offering from John Hamburg and company. As a screenwriter, Hamburg has been part of some instrumental pieces like Meet the Parents, Zoolander, and Along Came Polly. However, as a director, I Love You, Man was really the only other positively reviewed film he worked on.The cast is supremely talented with James Franco, Bryan Cranston and Megan Mullally holding down the lead roles and Zoey Deutch supplying more of a supporting role. Unfortunately, the schtick grows old after seeing Franco deliver the same line over and over again. The commitment is there from all the players, but it even seemed like they felt their characters were in a rut through the bulk of the film. The movie is totally uneven, but it still offers enough laughs to make it watchable through nearly two hours.
