This Is Where I Leave You is a film directed by Shawn Levy. I caught this film on cable and was expecting a very generic family film. However, I was truly surprised that I enjoyed this film. The film is very generic but has a lot of hearth through the performances and chemistry between the family members. It has to be said though that there is a reveal at the end of the film that was out of the blue and did not make much sense.

Not a terrible movie but the humour was a bit too forced. I got tired of the kid with the potty popping up everywhere. It was somewhat cute the first time, but then it got annoying. The overly open mother played by Jane Fonda was a bit too much too. C'mon, what mother basically shows off her breasts to her adult sons and talks about penises all the time? A little realism please. And, of course, she turns out to be lesbian. What else could the writer do to make this family even more hip?

This is actually a really beautiful movie. I think there is a lot of negativity towards it because people just don't seem to get it. With the high quality comedic cast, you expect a lot of laughs and a funny story line but that's not what the point of this film is. Without the comedic actors the story would have been too heavy, they're there to deliver a deep script in a palatable way and portray serious issues in a way that keeps the audience engaged. Quite similar to Garden State but with a little less quirk and a little more reality. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
