The American West in the 1870s. A European settler, Jon Jensen (Mads Mikkelsen), has just welcomed his wife and son to the country when they are kidnapped and murdered. He takes revenge on the murderers, only to discover that one was the brother of a local land baron, Henry Delarue. Delarue runs the local town with a brutal hand. Now he wants vengeance on the man who killed his brother and the local townspeople are too scared of him to stand up to him. Jon is fighting more than just the local thugs, he is facing the entire town.

Severe and violent revenge Western that doesn't offer a lot of surprises along the way. While the daylight scenes look great and remind of classics of the genre, the cloudy twilight and night scenes are so full of CGI they look horribly fake. Still, fans of a pretty straight forward John Wick in the West kind of flick could find satisfaction here. Either way it's over sooner than you can blink.

Fantastic dark and gritty modern day horse opera. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays one of the most despicable villains to come down the pike in quite some time. In fact, few characters in The Salvation can boast a clean moral compess and even fewer will live to see the credits roll. Strong across the board performances and the typically beautiful cinematography the western demands makes this one of the best post-Unforgiven additions to the genre.

it may not change the landscape of Westerns or bring anything relatively new to the genre, but it's still a thrilling revenge story mixed in with a classic western vibe. Mads Mikkelsen gives a fantastic performance as a man out for revenge, and Eva Green, even if she doesn't say anything in this movie, still brings a commanding presence to the screen with her striking beauty. it's well written and well directed, and the cinematography is stunning. The Salvation is most definitely recommended if you like westerns or revenge films.
