Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer secretly hopes to develop technology to help his diseased daughter, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defence (MoD). His new partner, a young woman gifted in the field of AI, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD. Things go wrong when the MoD takes over and advances the researchers' work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill and follow MoD instructions with its new and nearly indestructible body.

So I stumbled across this on Netflix, I like Scifi, so I thought I would give it a go. The review said that the two main leads were scientists that 'fell in love' then had their A.I idea stolen and corrupted by government'. If they fell in love then I missed that completely as I was being constantly jarred by the awful acting by Stephens. This was low budget and the budget was spent on mostly effective visuals but the story was horribly fragmented and there was not a single likeable person in the movie to root for. The first hour kept promising something better like a lit fuse wire burning brightly towards an eye popping and explosive conclusion, well it just burnt itself out and simply stopped. The music played in the action scenes almost brought my lunch back up. Netflix keeps buying rubbish and I keep watching it so who is to blame here? Luckily Ex Machina exists to show how this movie can be done well. What I don't get, and yes it's my opinion, is how this movie justifies the Tomatometer rating it has. This should be down in the 20's on a good day.

Exceptional. As an ardent sci-fi fan, I was blown away by the special effects, characters, and story. What a fantastic success. I appreciated how, for once, the classic "machine turned evil" trope was reimagined and portrayed the Machine in a better light as she tried to help her creator, Vincent, who she genuinely loved. Even though this may not be a triple-A movie with a triple-A budget, it sure does look and feel like one! Bravo!!!!

Released a year before Ex Machina, The Machine is very nearly the basic blueprint for it, to wit: scientists create a lovable AI (that happens to be a bodacious femme as well, natch) and begin to fall in love with it, er, her, ah, the program ("she's the only one who really understands me, yah?). This time out the government wants the robot/android/girlbot to be a killer soldier application as well, and homie don't play dat, yo! The technology part of the tale is on the backburner so this is very user friendly.
