I suspect those who read and loved the book are going to be let down by this film adaption. Given the storylines and subplots, turning this into a 3 or 4 part mini-series on PBS would have been a better bet. Instead, what the viewer sees is a stripped down, only partial faithful version of the book. SPOILER ALERT: all of the subplots: the Oscar Wilde letters, Remy, Sidney visiting the island, the initial "courtship" between Juliet and the islanders-gone. Half the islanders-gone. Some character changes weren't necessary, Juliet was orphaned as a child, not during the war. Mark is a publishing tycoon, not a GI. Instead, the screenwriter adds a subplot involving a B&B owner. If you haven't read the book, this is a charming enough movie, one you'd see more on the Hallmark Channel than the big screen.

I just finished watching The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, a Netflix original movie, based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer, and I loved it! A bit confusing initially, but quickly draws the viewer into the substantial story, the charming setting, and the quirky lovable characters. Lily James plays the role of the main character Juliet Ashton; she played Cinderella in the magical version that was in movie theaters a few years ago, and she continues her career with this genuinely heartfelt performance. Watch (or read) how books saved a small group of memorable characters in the Guernsey community (part of the British Islands) during its German occupation. Weekly bookclub meetings provided hope during a dark and dangerous period in history. Life-long friendships emerge, but not without heartbreak. So well-done.

Well done! Lily James is a great addition to any movie, but add on much of the cast from Downton Abbey and you are sure to have a hit, especially if you include the good looks and excellent acting of Michiel Huisman! Then have a great story line and Viola, you have The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society!I liked it so much I watched it 2X in one day! Good plot, interesting, well presented, historical (which surprised me), and the most beautiful Art Deco ring! Sorry, had to mention it as I am a huge fan. I recommend it completely!
