It is a gripping movie with twists along the story. The scene and the plot are good combinations with each other. The coldness of the color tone and its contrast lighting color created the mysterious atmosphere that fit perfect for the revenge story line. There are also some smart changes in the scenery. For instance, the man fell from the cliff and hit the water face that linked to the next scene the stranger hit the ice water face right away. (The correlations between are not just sound and scene, but also the murder and the victim)The music of this movie also fit along with the pace and not over-ruled the movie.

A Western set in Germany (or is it Austria)? That was too strange a proposition to pass up. And so I went and gave this film a chance. I was sure I would turn it off after a few minutes. But I did not. While the film is as formulaic as a Western gets, and completely predictable, I nevertheless enjoyed it. Perhaps it is the timeless revenge story that always seems to get me, the many homages to classic Westerns, or the great cast. All in all, well worth the watch if you like classic Westerns. Just don't expect to be surprised.

In "The Dark Valley," Greider(Sam Riley), a photographer, travels to a remote valley. Luckily, there is room at the inn run by Luzi(Paula Beer) and her aunt. In return, Luzi asks Greider for a photo of her and her fiance Lukas(Thomas Schubert), before their wedding. She also tries to warn Greider about how the town may be too tough for him, before he finds out firsthand."The Dark Valley" is certainly a well-filmed movie, and the photography angle is an intriguing one. But really, there is nothing else to separate this movie from every other slow moving, obvious, violent 19th century tale of revenge that you have seen before. Well, it is in German...does that count?
