One of the best stop-motion animations I've seen in a long time - no surprise given the 10 years in production it's taken, and investment in new technology - 3d printing for example to allow for a much greater range of faces / facial expressions to be used than would normally be possible, and some CGI - although I understand this was just in post-production to add to some of the larger crowd scenes where stop-motion would have been limited. But forgetting all the technical wizardry the story and characters are really strong with some unsurprisingly great performances from the likes of Ben Kingsley, Simon Pegg and even some of the smaller characters such as henchmen voiced by Pegg's partner in crime Nick Frost and the always funny Richard Ayoade. Original and highly entertaining - fun for kids of all ages!

A great inventive and wacky family stop motion film, The Boxtrolls is a really well thought up story. A bunch of trolls dressed in boxes whom come out at night to steal rubbish are misunderstood and feared by the humans. This film was hilarious and completely kooky, and really was just out there as a production. From the same studio that brought us Paranorman and Coraline you can really tell the style of animation was similar. A stellar voice cast with the likes of Ben Kingsley and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost just to name a few really made this film that bit more of a delight. Also hearing Richard Ayoade's voice as a character was just hilarious in its self. One of the best family films you will see in a long time.

The Boxtrolls represents a mayor downgrade from previous Laika offerings. Although it has the charm to make us like the characters and the great animation we have come to expect from Laika, it is far from being the best film Laika has given us, which to this date I still think is Coraline. Overall, you just can't help that while watching this film( in a teenager point-of-view), that you just want to stop watching the film, because it is kind of nonsense, and is a film that was made to show off the mastery of the animation that Laika has, but with that, an absurd story was made, making this film watchable just because of the animation or to just watch with kids. Negatives aside, you still can kind of watch it, it's just that you won't get the great storytelling we had with ParaNorman and Coraline.
