I seem to be in the minority with my opinion on this film. My take on it was that it was a dumbed-down, predictable, laugh-free and quite frankly patronising (towards its target audience) take on what could, in the hands of someone who realised the intelligence and depth of thought a child can possess, have been a genuinely moving film open to the more profound side of an event as serious and significant as The Day of the Dead. Instead, this is a film that is admittedly accessible, and in some cases with admittedly superb animation, but accessible for all the wrong reasons.

After struggling to watch Coco, I decided to go back to this movie and see if it really was as good as I remembered. I do admit that it's not the best movie because it does struggle badly in some places, but I really did enough this, way more than Coco (which is an unpopular opinion, I might say). The characters were great and the animation was really distant, which helped me favor this when I first watched it. Plus, this movie happened to come out in 2014, which was an amazing year for me. This movie also had novelty for me, since I had never really seen anything like it. Overall I give it a 3.5/5 or a 4/5.

It was quite good. The visuals are amazing, especially the lighting and animation quality. The story, however, does not meet up with the visuals. The things in the movie meet up well with traditional Mexican culture. There were ofrendas in the movie, each with three layers. The areas that the characters visit represent heaven, purgatory, and what's below, which is very true to the culture that this movie is based off of. The Land of the Remembered is bright and colorful, while the Land of the Forgotten is dark and blue. This matches with what Mexican culture believes that these two areas would be like. There was also Pan de Muertos in the movie on the ofrendas on Day of the Dead.
