Sputnik (2020)

This movie is like a melancholy emotional twisted mishmash of the Alien franchise.. I don’t know how many people would enjoy that! I mean we have audiences for emotional movie, yes but combining that with the horror genre is not ahem! Recommended in my honest opinion. To start off with the positives: Well made with good camerawork, high production value, solid acting all the way through, very good CGI and a nice suspenseful atmosphere. As much as those things were good, they don’t outweigh the negatives. It was very hard to get through the movie because one never quite developed any sort of affection for the characters. They were quite cliched, not to mention the orphin child sub-plot.

I was very interested in where the story was going initially, but after the beginning it just stopped going anywhere. Things happened, but nothing that was particularly important to the plot, and by the end when something did happen, you had lost so much interest in the plot that it didn’t matter.

Usually you don’t expect much from non American sci fi movies. But this one is a good find. It’s like seeing those movies of the 80’s or 90’s that still weren’t that formulaic and doesn’t try either to lecture you on morals or is totally devoid of any moral standing. The pace is slow but not boring (something American movies have lost the ability to keep) and the story evolves naturally and never fails to its own logic (there is no “you gotta be kidding me” moment as it all matches and fits without foolishness or absurdity, given the preset premises). Maybe it needed a little more or a little else to excel but it’s quite a good product and the special effects are perfect (on par or even surparssing the American CGI’s).
