Spree (2020)

My friend and I went to a midnight showing for this and were completely surprised. We fully expected this movie to be awful from reading the plot. This movie had to be one of the most original and fun movies I have seen. Most movies try to be in touch with social media, but this one hits on all cylinders. One of the best aspects of this movie would be the live comments from viewers of Kurt’s stream. The reactions are so accurate to how people would react to the events they are seeing. The entire movie, I’d try and point out funny comments to my friend and he’d do the same. The only problem with this movie is the duration, even at it standing at about 100 minutes long. The ending is also a great payoff. This was a fun film to watch, the lead actor was very good and a great representation of the culture trying craving to get more views and likes. This is all filmed as though watching from different social media apps and does a good job at staying engaging. Main negative is that the movie got a little messy at the end. I got the chance to see this at Sundance, and what turned me off a little from the movie was the director live streaming from his phone at the Q&A. This defeated the point of the movie. Loved Joe Kerry, Josh Ovalle, Kyle Mooney, and Sasheer Zamata in this. It’s a very interesting concept that a lot of people have screwed up, but this is definitely the best take I’ve seen. I think this film does a great job of commenting on how we’ve been desensitized by social media. This is in no way an anti-social media tirade. I do, however, think that the story of a sociopath who who will stop at nothing to become famous is an intriguing idea, especially with people like Jake and Logan Paul being some of the most popular creators on the internet. let’s be honest, this concept of film, although new and innovative, has been done before. from the fails of the Unfriended films, to the truly great Searching starring John Cho, this idea of making a film that consists of shots all based off of the internet, whether it’s via phone, computer etc., is very complex, and difficult to make a coherent and engaging movie with. Spree does feel a little crammed with too many things going on at once at certain points, but that’s what the creators are going for, as it makes the viewer uncomfortable and makes it hard to watch, while still dragging you in and making you beg for me. the film gets off to a shaky start and struggles to find out where it’s going at first, but around the halfway point, Kurt begins to go truly off the rails, which improves the story so much. the acting is by no means perfect, as many small side characters deliver poor, cringeworthy performances, but Joe Keery and Shaseer Zamata steal the show as the headline roles, and create a truly haunting and tense atmosphere. this movie is by no means perfect at all, but it successfully does what it was trying to do, and delivers a very real message about how the internet is starting to consume our society for the worse.
