1987. Naive Sherrie Christian has just arrived in Hollywood from Tulsa looking to become a rock star. She is just like Drew Boley was when he first arrived in Hollywood, he, now the Hollywood veteran, who works as a bar back at the Bourbon Club, known as the center of the rock scene in town and the place where many of the biggest acts in rock got their big break. The two meet as Drew helps Sherrie with a situation when she first arrives in town. Despite Dennis Dupree, the Bourbon's owner/manager, not liking to hire people like Drew or Sherrie - someone who has musical aspirations - as service staff, Drew is able to convince Dennis and his assistant Lonny to hire Sherrie as a server, Drew and Sherrie who have a blossoming mutual attraction. Dennis and Lonny, who are having financial difficulties, are able to convince rock star Stacee Jaxx, the perpetually stoned front man for the band Arsenal who got his first break performing at the Bourbon, to perform for free at a benefit concert at..

This is an epic documentary about the legendary reggae musician, Bob Marley, as told through archival footage and interviews with friends, family and colleagues. The documentary starts with his parents before going onto Jamaican independence and the how and why of reggae's distinctive sound, as I also learned a good deal about Jamaican politics in the bargain. While Marley goes from rags to riches in his musical career, the nation of Jamaica also comes of age. But after all of that, Marley still remains somewhat of an elusive figure, even though you could say that he was Jamaica and that Jamaica is Bob Marley.

A very informative and unbiased view on a culture, oppression, and vision of Rastafarian ideals I never knew. A great introduction to the beauty that is Jamaica and the genius songwriting that is Bob. What I loved about this film was the continued humbleness of Marley and the sheer generosity he maintained throughout his stardom and success. Although the ending and his abrupt death is a bit depressing, his ideals and thoughts on life cannot help but leave one thinking differently about today's current issues and confusing occurrences. I had no idea he started mainly in a doo-wap style and then found his voice later (almost by accident) infusing the 'funk' into it essentially creating reggae.

I have yet to reach the end... but it has taken forever for this whole film to add up to anything. The cinematography works, as does the basic production design, but the story does not. The character arc completely threw me off, as Cilliam Murphy's character seemed to arc for absolutely no apparent reason. Even if the ending does wrap this whole thing up... the 1.5 hours to reach that point, were bad. It's never a good sign, when you are already to grade something, before it's even finished. I've seen as much as I want to care about... and I am finishing this movie, just for the sake of finishing it... but I don't care about it's ending either way.

Stunning performance by Cillian Murphy. The twist at the end may be abrupt and not satisfying to most but perhaps that is exactly how it was supposed to be...to come suddenly, at the last minute, and just leaving everything else in the air. It was an entertainment movie and as such it did entertain me for the whole time I was watching it. but of course Cillian's acting was the greatest incentive to see the movie through. He's a brilliant actor and quite beautiful too.
