"Love is Strange" is one of those endearing movies that everyone can watch. Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) play partners whose new marriage causes a series of events. At its core this is a love story and a powerful one. Molina and Lithgow are phenomenal and have a remarkable chemistry despite being apart for the majority of the movie. There's something special about the score. Loved the music, especially the piano solos which tie into Molina's job as a music instructor. Ben is aloof but alert, George is caring and both are completely in love; as was I with this movie.

I am marking this down because it could have been so much better. Its starting scenes promise a good story but disputes are resolved seemingly without confrontation, and that is the let-down because drama depends on conflict. The people in this movie seem to be too timid to confront those who should be confronted, whether it's the Catholic Church or their family member. Even the direction seemed to be trying to please everyone, from its choice of score to the photography. Unnecessary scenes didn't set the mood, which I think was their intention, but just added to the slowness and boredom.Maybe it got better but I couldn't finish it.

A gay couple is forced to move into separate apartments when their marriage threatens the sensibilities of one's employer.An acting master class by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina with a fine supporting performance by Marissa Tomei highlight this softly moving story. The main conflicts are sometimes funny and sometimes quite dramatic and always genuine. Both main characters' loneliness figures prominently in the film's action, and its rendering is quite touching. While the film is "issue-driven," dealing with the injustices inflicted against gays and the affordability of real estate in Manhattan, it stays focused on the characters, which is its primary strength.Overall, Lithgow and Molina together create a gem.
