Seven years after the apparent death of Chen Zhen, who was shot after discovering who was responsible for his teacher’s death (Huo Yuanjia) in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. A mysterious stranger arrives from overseas and befriends a local mafia boss. That man is a disguised Chen Zhen, who intends to infiltrate the mob when they form an alliance with the Japanese. Disguising himself as a caped fighter by night, Chen intends to take out everyone involved as well as get his hands on an assassination list prepared by the Japanese.

It's hard to believe they obviously spent so much money on this production yet were so careless about keeping it authentic. There were more anachronisms than you could shake a chopstick at. The German Army did not outfit its soldiers in World War I in spiffy, spotless brown uniforms. They wore battlefield gray, same as in WW2. Likewise, the French Army did not wear the helmets of British soldiers. The bulk of the movie is supposed to take place in Shanghai in the 1920's, yet whenever we see an automobile, it's an American make from the late 1940's. I'm sure other viewers could pick up even more.

While the story isn't the best or fleshed out by any means, the amazing choreographed fight scenes are jaw dropping! The film looks beautiful, albeit a little unrealistic for Shanghai but the environments are meant to really pop. Donnie Yen does an amazing job and there are times at the end where he really takes on the soul of Bruce Lee and Jet Li. If you like martial arts films and can stand a story that maybe sliced up a bit and all over the place but is an entertaining film, you can do much worse.

Donnie Yen has really grown on me and though Legend of the Fist felt like a rip off of the amazing Ip Man it is nowhere near as good. Legend of the Fist offers more anti-white propaganda (though if we are willing to make films about others and portray them poorly we need to be willing to put up with it when others use us as the antagonist. Yen still steals the screen but the story is a bit over-the-top as are the fights and lacks the realness of Ip Man. A decent film for fans of kung fu films but not one for anyone else. .
