What a crazy ride in the world of investigative journalism. Gary was investigating whether or not the CIA had helped with drug trafficking to help fund a war. At first it seemed like he was getting his story pretty easy and everyone was talking. Then he goes public and all the sources claim they don't know what he's talking about. Everyone turns on him and it blows up in his face. It's intense. He's followed. He's forced to go to a smaller paper while everything clears. This is not a movie it's going to make you laugh but it has a really good cast, good investigative journalism, and it's crazy to watch one guy try and crack open a huge case that the CIA kept covered from the American people.

I've always enjoyed Jeremy Renner's work, and I enjoyed it here too. But that's all this movie has going for it. Perhaps my mistake was to watch it immediately after watching Helen Mirren in Woman in Gold and so unconsciously set the two movies in opposition to one another. But that can't be undone, so there you have it.Kill the Messenger is another crass, coarse, pre-Web crime mystery with lots of collusion between a malevolent government and malevolent drug cartels. Some scenes - especially in the courtroom - seemed utterly pointless. And that Webb dies without getting anywhere real makes this a sad attempt to express the futility of existence - something done much better by George Romero's zombie flicks.Would have been worth 1 star if it weren't for Renner.

The critics' reviews - looking for drama and suspense in the second half of the film - underscore the message of the story. The last investigative reporter finds information that could have destroyed the Reagan whitehouse, but instead is destroyed himself by the government and the cowardice of his fellow journalists. This was an amazing, heartbreaking film. If you're looking for an edge of your seat thriller, then watch a mission impossible movie. If you want to see what happens when an honest man does an important, dangerous job, that angers powerful people, then this is the film for you.
