This is one of the most amazing stories and one film that deserved more recognition for its stars. Caine shines as Larch and Lindo is scene chewing as Mr Rose, you can barely fault the film as it leads you down a very unpredictable path. Maguire is an interesting choice for the lead, I don't tend to have him as a lead actor but he demonstrates something most actors would've struggled with here, quietness. The film is beautifully shot and every scene is crafted with careful detail, I almost forgot Hallstrom was such an amazing director. This film is one of the films that shines in his resume, he has since focused on Spark novels, which have been for financial success as opposed to critic attention. This is just a wonderful film that deserves more recognition. 11-02-2018.

Perfectly cast and well-acted, this is an engaging and sentimental story about a young man trying to find his place in the world and, along the way, discovering that his decisions will have a profound effect on the direction of his path as well as that of those around him. Dealing with some heavy and controversial issues, you can't help but feel that these characters, their story-arcs and their very real problems have had a soft focus applied to them so as not to be too depressing or harsh. Then again, a romanticised view of life was never too great a sin, in my book. And so the homely feel, relatability and abundance of goodness displayed wins you over leaving you with a film that is not quite as realistic as it could have been, but is nevertheless a moving and satisfying watch.

From the Swedish turned Hollywood Filmmaker Lasse Holstrom who gave us the classic Who's Eating Gilbert Grape? & modern gem Hachi brings us another moving drama. The story of a young boy growing up in an orphanage desperately seeking more in life & eventually getting it in a single opportunity. This film tackles the hardest theme of then life & all it's intricacies. Tobey McGuire is good but his nothing on the wonderful script & timeless performance of Michael Caine. It's a moving film with real characters, it's stirring & emotional & well worth the 2 hours you need to invest in it.
