In order to provide for his destitute family of drifters, a likable, sincere, able-bodied 15-year-old boy comes to hire on among a burned-out ex-con's group of aging forest laborers. As the man becomes more and more aware of the boy's abusive home life, his deeply buried humanity is roused. Drinking and smoking incessantly to remain detached from his volatile temper, he finally takes the matter into his own hands - come what may - when the boy's alcoholic father finally goes too far.

American Social Realism, New Southern Gothic. Dark and well-made. Well directed and well-acted. It could use improvement in editing as the pacing lags, but in my book that just brings it down to a score of 9 on a scale from 1 to 10. Cage and Sheridan are excellent. The fact that only 68% liked this says little about the film and much more about the lack of depth of too many viewers. This film is unsung, misunderstood and under-appreciated. A good Southern Gothic film is a rare thing and people who have dissed "Joe" don't seem to understand the genre.

David Gordon Green is a prolific director. This time he returns with a beautiful story of a young man finding a father figure in Joe, a loner who works for a deforestation company. The film tells about redemption, friendship, violence and parenthood in a very unique and specific way. One will inevitably be moved by the relationship that develops between Joe and his young recruit Gary. Their friendship is slowly maturing on screen and the film becomes a tale of survival for the young Gary who will learn to provide for himself and grow as his own person outside of the familial nightmare he's been forced to live because of his dad's alcoholism and troubled nature. This is a great film, very well shot and photographed. Nicolas Cage is better than ever and young Ty Sheridan is once again showing how talented he is. Strong film.
