With many simply horrible to witness sequences that stick with you long after you've seen it, Grave of the Fireflies truly is a deeply tragic, devastating film that is all the more powerful as the emotion in the last third is earned thanks to its great character work, build up and many beautiful bonding scenes between the two siblings portrayed before. The animation is excellent and the direction from Isao Takahata is superb and he is one of my favorite anime directors, but it is its score imbued with a haunting quality to it that makes those tragic scenes even more unbearable to watch. It truly is one of the best animated films of all time and it might be the finest war drama ever made.
95%Watched this on 11/9/15Misinterpreted by the US critics (for satisfying themselves) as an Anti War film, Grave of the Fireflies is a vivid account on the atrocities committed by the US on the Japanese people and about the shameless Japanese society that prepares itself to welcome the US after it's nation has been defeated. The film remains extremely patriotic towards it's nation (and reason why I believe it's no anti-war film) and even the director expressed that it has no anti-war message. The story is instead of that of a brother and sister(both kids) and their relationship. The character of Satsuko is always memorable and would stick to my heart. Fireflies manage to render it's emotional story without much of the unnecessary melodrama and is heartfelt.
I loved this gripping and moving account of the last days of British rule in India, and the aftermath of partition. The story of the politicians struggle to come to an agreement about post British india is interwoven with a more personal story about a Hindu boy in love with a Muslim girl, and the affect that partition has on their lives. Among the sadness are touches of humour - the librarians arguing over which books should remain in India and which go to Pakistan; "Wuthering Heights must go to Pakistan" - "Then Jane Eyre must stay in India - and all of Jane Austen!" A beautiful, touching film.
