Slow, heavy handed in it's "box ticking" of current societal hot button issues, and due to this and sloooow pacing, hard to stay immersed in. Nice cinematography & great acting do not rescue this movie from being tedious, pretentious, and difficult to engage with. Art film lovers, film school students, and the like will love it-just like film critics and The Academy will. Not only "not for everyone", this movie is "not for almost anyone". If you like thiat sort of thing, by all means go, but probably 75% of moviegoers won't.Critics are not allowed by their peers not to love this, so their opinion is moot on this one. I'd wait a bit for audience reaction to settle out, but tellingly a noticable quantity of patrons in the theater were gone before the end at my showing.
Beside the great performance of Ethan Hawke the movie didn't move me at all or almost. At the beginning I was feeling empathy for him, for losing his son and still find a way to live his life and help other people in some way. But when he started to embrace the idea of becoming a kamikaze I saw it as a sign of weakness. He's a lost soul without a purpose. Maybe he may find his salvation in Amanda Seyfried character, but we don't get to see it. It's just annoying that it ended so abruptly without a proper ending.
Wait for it to hit DVD on Redbox. I drove 20 miles to see this movie. It was the only theatre in Houston showing it. With a 95% rating from rotten tomatoes I was expecting something thought provoking , entertaining, worth the $10 I paid. It wasn't close. Ethan Hawke acted like a timid outcast priest. Even though that was exactly the role he was playing, it looked like he was acting. Not exactly worth an award. It started slow. It ended slow. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth other than the stale popcorn that was sold. Even the filming was in a square format not wide screen. Wide screen wouldn't help it. Wait for it to hit DVD because it will not be on HD. It just isn't that good. Disappointing.
