A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.

Stylistically a ripoff of Scorsese pics, American Hustle is, at the very least, very entertaining performances by a stellar cast. They support an otherwise bloated, formulaic script that is being given entirely too much credit and is not Oscar worthy. However, every cast member shines and I wish they could all be nominated. The surprises of the film were the Louis CK/Bradley Cooper relationship, which were the highlight for me, and Jennifer Lawrence's insane portrayal. Christian Bale seemed to channel DeNiro too much and was the weakest character. Amy Adams was so sexy and was refreshing after her snoozefest part in Man of Steel. Definitely worth seeing, but not stellar.

David O. Russell directs what is probably his finest work ever featuring an all-star cast in costumes and hairdos that perfectly match the disfunction of the 70's. Though it's based on the ABSCAM scandal, its narrative is more focused on its morally-flawed characters and their ever-changing motives as the circumstances they find themselves in begin to develop. With that in mind, that may confuse and disappoint a lot of viewers hoping to see an exciting film about an elaborate hustle, but instead were left with an rich character study. Nonetheless, if one can accept the story that it weaves together then one can appreciate the sheer brilliance and complexity this film exudes. It is without a doubt one of the best, if not, the best film 2013 has to offer.

American Hustle is technically well made, but the characters are, for the most part, so unlikeable that it isn't fun to watch. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper act so well that they make me want to put an ax through my TV. The entire 2nd act of the movie was confusing as I wasn't sure who the bad guy was, who we were suppose to root for, and what I was supposed to be feeling. There some great funny moments, and some sympathetic performances, and I can understand why some people like this movie, but it simply isn't my cup of tea and it gave me a headache to watch.
