The whiney, crybaby lead male loser, deserved a boot in the bum and certainly not the good things that came his way. This contrived melodramatic tear jerker, jerked no tears but did stretch credibility to a breaking point.Maggie Smith could make an ad for garbage bags interesting, but even she seemed a little bored (and I suspect) disgusted with the dumb script. And why, oh why, did the talented and lovely Kristin Scott Thomas lower herself to grace this mess? From my male perspective, watching Ms. Thomas was the only reason to endure to the end, as the outcome seemed obvious from the first act.

To all those that didn't quite grasp the essence of this movie....the writer has twisted the holy grail of passionate affairs justified by desire and 'discreetness' (as per story) to the lives of those effected by an act of pure self. The audience is twisted around to see what was at 'the back of the room'...a view rarely exposed with honesty to audiences who prefer to stay in the moments of lust, heartbreaker and justifications. All measures of the film as in script, acting, pace and characterisation are excellent. See this film to know more about consequences of self pursuit.

there's a slew of these British made movies centering on English-Americans in France and I suppose the formula works since studios keep putting them out --this one has all the cliches from start to end (beret wearing dude on a bike as Kline approaches his residence in the Marais!) and incredulous by the fartest stretch of the imagination (stumbling into a random real-estate office and striking up a convo about selling his house?) but its got formidable perf. from Kline and KSThomas. Very moving 5 minute scene bet. Kline/KST thats hard for most seasoned actors to pull off. Worth a watch
