Thor (2011)

Marvel takes their cinematic universe to the realm of the gods, introducing a character who, in the wrong hands, could've crashed and burned. Thankfully, in the steady and capable hands of Kenneth Branagh, the film is a tonne of fun with Branagh fully embracing the theatricalities of his main character and the story, using it all to really strengthen the film and set it apart from anything we've seen before, by cleverly utilising the "fish out of water" concept with Thor being cast out to Earth to play among the mortals. It helps too that they found a person who perfectly embodies the chiselled features of the God of Thunder, with the remarkable find of Chris Hemsworth. And how can we forget Tom Hiddleston as the deceptive Loki, another outstanding choice, as he becomes one of the big scene stealers.

What has made Nolan's Batman, as well as Favreau's Iron Man, movies so well-received has been because they have taken normal humans and had them rise into something bigger, making it more believable, no matter how outlandish. So when I heard Thor would be included, as he should, in the Avengers saga, especially with his own film, I was admittedly concerned that there was no way to maintain the integrity established by Nolan and Favreau and retain the strong story and audience. I was wrong. While not a perfect film, I cannot imagine a better handling of this mythological story and have it connect to the world today as perfectly as Kenneth Branagh's Thor.

Natalie Portman is a bad actress and she has no chemistry with Chris Hemsworth, who also isn't a good actor. Tom Hiddleston fails to impress as Loki -- he just isn't menacing in any way. Normally in these types of movies there is a token black guy who is a sidekick to the white lead character, but here there isn't. Heimdall you say? He isn't really Thor's sidekick -- he's just the black doorman for the white people of Asgard. In a subtly racist move, the black Asgardian just stands around all day guarding the entrance to Asgard -- he's just their doorman. Sir Anfernee Hopkins brings nothing to the proceedings. No memorable action sequences at all. I liked Kat Dennings and Jaimie Alexander more than Natalie. I wish Rene Russo had a larger role.
