So one of the, scratch that, the most important part of your home invasion movie is to have a threating villain. The person(s) who are invading your intimate space are supposed to be dangerous, threatening, and make you fear for your life. Idris Elba certainly has the physical presence to be terrifying, but his character does nothing really to warrant that level of horror. In fact, he spends a majority of this movie getting his ass kicked by a woman half his height and at least half his weight. The plot twist is also weird. Having a straight home invasion is fine, but trying way too hard to connect little plot threads just doesn't work at all here. At no point did I ever feel truly afraid for the people whose home was being invaded and for a movie who's purpose is just that, well it feels more than disappointing.

I don't know why people hate on this movie. The plot is plain dumb--sure--you never, ever open your home to strangers. Just never. The actors have fun with the roles though, and they do a good job. It's hard not to like Elba in anything he's in and Taraji equally so. It's not a bad way to kill an hour and a half, and that end fight between the two is awesome. It could have been better, but you can say that about 99% of all movies made--what could of been, what you would have done differently, but what's here is a decent thriller with two attractive stars going toe to toe.

Unlike it's title, the movie for sure doesn't live up to it's title's expectations. The slow paced biography about one of China's most famous female novelist does not manage to shine brightly given it harps to much on her love life rather than showcasing her talent and inspiration. While Ann failed in showcasing Xiao Hong's career or rather talent, the visual and the cinematography is beautiful ecstatically. however the sloppy cuts and the constant back and forth era jumping as if we are teleported randomly into the writers life is uncalled for. This definitely is not one of Ann Hui's golden era.
