Once again a group has escaped Death's design. After four films, how does a series come back with something fresh and original? Well, Final Destination 5 changes up the rules so that a survivor can gain new life if they kill someone. And in addition to that, this new story weaves itself into the continuity of the previous films in an interesting way. But a Final Destination film is all about the elaborate death scenes, and 5 comes off as a bit weak in that area. A few of the deaths are teased out too long, and in general they don't strike the right balance between comedy and horror that is needed for a slasher of this kind. Final Destination 5 is an interesting new take on the series, but it isn't as enjoyable as the previous films.
How there got to be one sequel to FInal Destination, let alone four, I'll never know. The first was fairly original, though not good, overall. Every sequel then just followed the same template. This, the fourth sequel, adds nothing new, and just piles on the gross-out deaths and maiming, because it can. All the blood and gore is entirely gratuitous, and gets boring quite quickly.
Final Destination 5 is definitely an improvement over its predecessor. It is very clear that this is a very serious horror comedy. Every instance of tragic comedy in this film is used at the right time and executed pretty well. What holds this movie back is just incoherency on the fact that this is a comedy. Not everyone will understand this film and why it holds purpose. Most people who watch it will just claim it's a very bad film, rather than a comedy which makes fun of bad movies. It had very original and creative ways of killing off its characters but for what? It feels like all of the characters are too one-sided and intentionally stupid, with almost zero character diversity. Almost nothing makes the characters special as individuals. But, all in all, it's not a bad film. It's merely a mediocre film and basically the same as every other film in the franchise. It's pretty fun to watch, but no everything makes sense and you feel no loss when any of the characters die.
