There might be a genuinely good film hiding in here, but the filmmakers have done a great job of trying to cover it up.Chadwick Boseman makes a, sometimes, uncanny James Brown and Viola Davis turns in a, as usual, wonderful performance as his mother, but the film itself seems to pull one too many punches. This is most noticeable with a subplot involving Brown abusing his wife. It's a big deal for all of 3 minutes until it suddenly...isn't a big deal anymore. Scenes come and go with little dramatic impact and the film seems to build to nothing. At times it feels as if this was shot as an R rated film and edited to a crowd-pleasing PG-13. Something feels tampered with.

Unfortunately, this film is a little too "soft-handed" on its subject, and it does not go deep enough into exploring all of the complexities as an icon throughout his various eras; it would rather do that than bring him down and cast him in a more human (i.e.relatable) light. Still, what elevates this film above schlock is the two wonderful lead performances by Chadwick Boseman and Nelsan Ellis (portraying Bobby Byrd). As Brown, Boseman embodies the man and his many reinventions with his entire soul. He throws everything he has got into his channeling of the "Hardest Working Man in Show Biz." Ellis also carries a lot of the hefty dramatic scenes with great aplomb in his role. The supporting cast is full of some other fine acting from the likes of Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and (an underutilized) Craig Robinson.

"Get On Up", la película sobre la vida del gran James Brown, se favorece gracias a una impresionante actuación a cargo de Chadwick Boseman, que aunque no canta en la película, se mueve, habla y actúa como el mismo "Padrino del Soul". Spike Lee había pensado alguna vez en hacerse cargo de este proyecto con Eddie Murphy como protagonista. Sin embargo, el proyecto cayó en las manos del productor Mick Jagger (quien con su banda tuvo que cerrar alguna vez un acto de Brown) y del director Tate Taylor ("Winter's Bone", "The Help"). El resultado es óptimo, aunque no alcanza a abarcar una larga vida de activismo político, locura, sentido del perfeccionismo, maltrato, drogadicción y mucha música. Pero no importa, "Get On Up" es una gran película sobre un gran artista.
