The Wedding Singer (1998)

I just saw this after having watched it once long ago, probably back in the VHS days, late nineties. I think it’s still incredibly charming and funny today (in 2011). I rarely laugh out in the movies, especially alone, but I did here. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are so likable in their respective lead roles. Weirdly, I think it’s because they’re shown to be really sweet and compassionate and from them it seems genuine. There’s such a good chemistry between those 2 and you can’t help, but root for them to somehow get together. Of course, several of the funny bits come from the usual Sandler’s losing his temper bits. Lots of humour comes from contrasts or switching between moods (ex.: from nice or sad to angry and back again), especially the time Sandler sings his latest composition. You shouldn’t laugh, because the lyrics are so grim, but because of his performance, you can’t help yourself. Consider also how hilarious it is when he sings a famous happy song, but does it so desperately. You have an amazing soundtrack full of 80s songs that are thematically right on the spot and often quite amusing (especially that famous Boy George song). I was pleased at how generally good Sandler was with the frequent singing despite his few distinctive funny voice inclinations. From the credits, it’s supposed to be him and it sure looks like he’s really singing instead of lip-syncing. Lots of enjoyment also comes from seeing the (now) outrageous fashions and coiffures of the 80s, as well as the inappropriate things kids and grandmas will say and do. It’s obvious people who were teens or adults in the 80s will get the most of the many references, but I do think younger people will also enjoy this very much for other reasons.
The Wedding Singer, despite being a romantic comedy, is not that predictable or conventional if you consider, amongst other things, how both main characters start off in a serious relationship headed for impending marriage. I even found it quite touching a few times, almost shedding a tear near the end. Paraphrasing somewhat the start of the movie, some of us, like me, will likely never ever find true love, but it’s nice to keep the illusion alive by watching such a sweet-natured and genuinely funny romantic comedy. The 80s setting is a bonus, but it’s the heart and laughs that make it shine. It’s also something I could easily see myself watching every few years with equal pleasure.

Tarzan may not live up to the same standards of other Disney movies like The Lion King or Aladdin, but it's still a great film filled with excitement. It's visuals are great, it's funny, there is a talented voice cast, and just a very entertaining movie. There are also some scenes that can be pretty frightening for a younger audience, but it's Disney. They would never make anything insanely scary or over the top. What can I say? It's an 8.5 out of 10. May not compare to other movies like Toy Story 2, but it is still a very pleasant entry from Disney.

I really enjoyed this film when I was a kid even though some things could have been way better. If it was up to me, I wouldn't have had the animals talk because it wasn't necessary. When Kala found Tarzan, there was no dialogue and it could have been like that for the rest of the movie, until the humans showed up. There were more mature (and sometimes more violent) parts in this movie than the other Disney animated movies. The filmmakers should have embraced the serious moments more. But the good things in this film are beyond brilliant and Phil Collins songs are truly amazing.

One of my absolute favorite Disney films. The story of Tarzan is one that has been told a million times, but not with the same amount of heart that this one has. The pure emotion that the animated face of the titular character gives is breath taking. For a character with few lines the audience feels connected to him the most on just facial features and body language. The vocal talents all give great balance to one another. For the quiet Tarzan he is paired up with the boisterous tantor and other wild buddies to play off of. I can't recommend this film any higher to animation lovers across the globe.

Disney's imagining of Edgar Rice Burrough's classic story is a fast-paced adventure that audiences of all ages will enjoy mainly due to its stunning animation style combining classic 2D hand-drawn animation with beautiful three-dimensional backgrounds, some exhilarating action scenes as Tarzan practically slides down the vines as if he were Tony Hawk skateboarding - mainly because the animators got the inspiration from skating videos - and some amazing songs from Phil Collins especially "Two Worlds" and "You'll Be in My Heart". Like The Lion King, this Disney outing is worth returning to.
