Barney Ross leads the “Expendables”, a band of highly skilled mercenaries including knife enthusiast Lee Christmas, martial arts expert Yin Yang, heavy weapons specialist Hale Caesar, demolitionist Toll Road and loose-cannon sniper Gunner Jensen. When the group is commissioned by the mysterious Mr. Church to assassinate the merciless dictator of a small South American island, Barney and Lee head to the remote locale to scout out their opposition. Once there, they meet with local rebel Sandra and discover the true nature of the conflict engulfing the city. When they escape the island and Sandra stays behind, Ross must choose to either walk away and save his own life – or attempt a suicidal rescue mission that might just save his soul.

When this movie was announced, having been a lifelong fan of Sly and Arnie, this was action movie heaven becoming reality. While it may not have lived up to that, there was enough good in it to see that more names could be added and the action made bigger and better. There is a powerful scene involving Mickey Rourke, that while very impressive acting, is totally out of place in the context of the blood n guts mercenary story.

The director's cut is the way to go, but regardless of the script's inevitable shortcomings, Stallone's labor of love pet-project is a successful violent throwback to the far more potent action films of the '80's. Check your narrative and character development expectations at the door and get ready for R-rated action sequences that have been sorely missing from the superhero-movie-dominated cinemas of the 2000's and 2010's.

The Expendables rounds up a cast of action stars from the 90s era and puts them on a special mercenary squad. The squad features Stallone, Statham and Crews who are sent to an island to take on a corrupt general and rogue CIA operative. The Expendables is just what you expect, some fun action and your typical blockbuster. The movie really does not add much else and does not feature some of the other stars nearly as much as the trailer would have you believe. Like most movies with a popular cast, the film would not be even on the radar if not for the cast.
