In New York City, couple Joel and Molly are having dinner with their couple friends, Kyle and Karen. In the general discussion of their respective relationships and how they met, Joel and Molly, in telling their story, say that it is exactly like a corny romantic comedy. The story they end up telling not only has every romantic comedy cliché thrown in, but it is told in the style of a romantic comedy, complete with crazy characters who should be smarter to figure out a smoother path to a happy ending for Joel and Molly. But that one romantic comedy element that is the big payoff may not be reality, or perhaps it is.

This movie pretty much has everything that makes me laugh the hardest. Everything spot-on in romantic comedy cliches and overall Hollywood film editing, script dialogue and plot points. It's also a beautiful homage to films like "Airplane!," "Top Secret" and some of the best David Zucker/Pat Proft stuff. Combined with David Wain's very hilarious and unique sense of humor. Not to mention the fantastic performances in here which are actually hard to pull of in their meticulous way of showing the absurdity in bad romantic comedy characters.

A very scattershot rom-com, which is simple in premise - a couple describes their story to their friends at dinner, via flashback - but doesn't click often. Poehler & Rudd are good, but it's directed by David Wain, so it's just a bunch of their 'Wet Hot American Summer' friends (Meloni, Ian Black, Marino) having fun and not really worrying about making a good film. There's so many side characters (Hader, Kemper, Mantzoukas, Helms, Park, McBrayer, Scott, Stamos, Greenfield, Shannon, Dean Morgan) that there's no time for anyone to have any meaningful impact and get anything more than cursory laughs. Lots of attempted jokes to skewer the genre, but most of them are too over-the-top or stupid, that they don't work. Would've been better as a TV show/sketch.

I really didn't like this one at all, and based on reviews, I seem to be in the minority. It's a satire/spoof of romantic comedies, but it essentially takes the romantic comedy standard plot and makes it slightly more extreme. There' into enough going on to really make it funny in my opinion. There are a million cameos, but nine are great. Seems I just don't get the director's style, I also didn't like his "Wet Hot American Summer" which everyone else did so much that Netlfix turned it into a series 10 years after the film. So, all I can say is see this and decide for yourself.
