Amelia, who lost her husband in a car crash on the way to give birth to Samuel, their only child, struggles to cope with her fate as a single mom. Samuel’s constant fear of monsters and violent reaction to overcome the fear doesn’t help her cause either, which makes her friends become distant. When things can not get any worse, they read a strange book in their house about the ‘Babadook’ monster that hides in the dark areas of their house. Even Amelia seems to feel the effect of Babadook and desperately tries in vain to destroy the book. The nightmarish experiences the two encounter form the rest of the story.

Superb horror film thanks to some excellent acting & a simple but scary premise. Essie Davis is excellent as Amelia, conveying the grief & frustration of both the loss of her husband & dealing with a temperamental child (well-played by Noah Wiseman, whose behavior becomes explained as the story progresses). Behind the camera, Jennifer Kent crafts a creepy but simply story, with the Babadook being one of the scariest monsters in recent memory (it's amazing what a simple black hat & coat can do). Even the storybook is scary by itself. Plus, Kent knows to use horror as a metaphor, this time having the Babadook represent the grief Amelie feels over the lose of her husband while never letting on till the end if it's real or not. Overall, one of the best horror movies in recent years, introducing a new monster sure to frighten us for years to come.

To reiterate a perhaps overused phrase, the Babadook is a film that is hauntingly beautiful. This film has tremendous heart and sincerity with an ending that reminds us that we can't eliminate grief and depression entirely, but we can come to terms with it. Not only that, there was some terrific use of practical effects and clever cinematography that should satisfy horror fans.

Why this movie has an almost perfect rating is beyond me. The movie takes place in a house 85% of the time, where an annoying Mother whose on the verge of insanity.... constantly shaking and scared of her own shadow(literally). But it gets worse, her son is even more annoying than her. We don't even see this "monster", because its a symbol of her Grief? Such a stupid movie that goes in such meaningless direction, Not scary, not entertaining. If you wanna see the babadook, goto your local ghetto and watch a middle aged crack addict talk to herself.
