It's hard to stress how stupid this movie is. Deepika Padukone (as Leela) and Supriya Pathak are excellent as the female leaders of their gang/family, but Ram is self-absorbed to the point of parody, and it's hard to understand what Leela sees in him, and the audience doesn't much like him, and therefore it's hard to care about the story. The tone of the movie is all over the map. The lighter and comedic bits work well, as do some of the music interludes, but it is also about an hour too long. If this were a 90-minute off-beat modern parody of Romeo & Juliet set in India, it would be very good. As it is, it is bloated and uneven. I would rewatch some of the dance sequences, but I wouldn't want to sit through this again.

A true musical - great song and dance sequences, theatrical, over the top emotional, disgustingly violent at times but overall an unexpected feast simply on the strength of its music. Good leads and phenomenal sets. But all said and done, it is the music. Like in all true musicals, a completely predictable storyline only helps in ensuring that the viewer focuses only on the entertainment part.

Amazing in every aspect. From the dialogues to the choreography and from the music to the acting, this is a magnificent spectacle of artwork. Ranveer and Deepika turn in their best performances to date, one that will be remembered for years to come. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has once again proven himself to be able to make the grandest movies of anyone in the industry. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Saawariya and now Ram Leela. All will go down in history as classics. It is even more impressive when one considers that he not only penned the script: he wrote the music as well! This might just be the album of the year, unfortunately outshined by chartbusters like Chennai Express and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The beats of Tattad Tattad and Nagada Sang Dhol are like no other and the scenes are amazing beyond comparison. Overall, this is by far the movie of the year and will undoubtably win big during the upcoming awards season.
