Another historical tale that grips us throughout, yet is not individually inspiring enough to distinguish itself from the many Romanesque based movies we've seen before. A slave's family is killed by the Emperor, and many years on that slave rises through the gladiatorial ranks of battles before his notoriety allows him the opportunity to come face to face with the man who slaughtered his loved ones - Where have we seen that before I wonder? All I can say is, if you're going to make a film based on Gladiator, be prepared for the critics not to like it anywhere near as much. This is good, but not that good.

I painted my bedroom when I was about 14 while my parents were on holiday. I recall standing back after the last brush stroke and realising what a mistake I'd made. My dad was mad as hell when he got home. For those of you wondering why I'm telling you this, it's a metaphor for this movie. Pompeii is my bedroom. The actors are me. The audience is my dad. It's so bad, it's not even ironic. Whatever were they thinking?

Much to the disappointment of the team involved here, I'm sure, adding an exploding volcano to the film did not distract from the fact that the script is, essentially, an extremely cheap knock-off of another sword-and-sandal epic. That's right, if you ever wondered what 'Gladiator' would have been like if P W Anderson had directed it, then that question has just been answered, and I sincerely recommend that you go and watch or re-watch Ridely Scott's masterpiece, instead.
