This movie handles the idea of vapid celebrity culture and the TMZ style media coverage that follows, while playing out on the backdrop of a Saw style torture tournament. The outstanding issue is that the themes the film tries to comment on we have seen covered a hundred times in better, more subtle projects. The damnation of meaningless celeb status is constantly waved in the audiences face which doesn’t help the characters feel relatable, but perhaps thats the point? Non of these feelings are aided by the tepid script and questionable acting either, which led me into a sort of numb coma halfway through the film as I watched fictional instagram people being killed one by one and feeling nothing. I recognise and respect that the film had a smaller budget and lesser known cast than most mainstream releases and aesthetically it was fairly pleasing and some scenes hit the mark and just about kept my interest afloat despite my often deflating attention. A film that is promoted as a mix of black mirror and saw, a film that is put on the same level as Parasites with a 0.1 point lag. At such moments you want to believe in the miracle that you missed this diamond in the information noise. You go to the cinema, you open your eyes wide, and the logs of dilettantism fly into them. The biggest complaint is not even to the script, but to the operator-Director, who, apparently, was forced to shoot this film. Put the camera angles on a tripod and go smoke until the Director says ” cut!”- but this approach can withstand a whole movie, if it is “Missing Megan”. Absolute lack of play with details. It shows a scene of the story, and then the next, and then the next, and you don’t want to stop at any of them – clumsy work. The new Arri or Red cameras, which shoot the tape, with its ringing picture pokes your nose at the scenery, props and low-budget effects collected on your knee. In the film, there are two unpleasant moments with dismemberment, entrails and all that. They do not cause chilling horror – you see an abomination on the screen, but there is no desire to step towards it, as in the saw, for example. There are no complaints about the actors. If they were cast in the same roles with the same script by seasoned filmmakers, not crooks, they would have a chance to open up.
