I have seen a few low budget films, and even if they are good you can tell they are low budget. 13 Graves is different, it may have been low budget but you you do not feel that you are watching a low budget affair. The Sound is excellent throughout, The cinematography is brilliant and the Script and the actors performance throughout the film are really very good. The film starts as a gangster Movie, two hit men taking their latest victim to the woods to shoot an bury him in the place where their other victims are buried. The tight and often witty script is wonderfully delivered especially by Kevin Leslie as Frank, and Morgan James as Terry. But cast remain strong and believable throughout the film. No spoilers, but things go wrong, the three met the Woodsman character and then the Horror aspect of the film begins. Think Guy Ritchie meets the Wickerman and you will have an idea of the feel of this film. As events unfold tension rises and things may not be as they seem, and their is a nice twist at the end.
If I had a criticism it would be that the ending is not immediately obvious, some people did not get it. Also the relationship between the “acolytes” and the Woodsmen is not fully explained. However the film is 87 minutes long and if it were longer and tried to flesh out these points, it may have lost its impact. Also I am a believer in leaving things open sometimes, gives the viewers something to discuss and form their own theories.
Overall 13 Graves looks Good, Sounds good and has strong performances by all involved. It kept me interested and I cared about the characters.. even if they were not “good guys” The film has strong themes of cycles, and consequences of not changing those cycles.
Thoroughly enjoyed this folk horror with a theme of karmic retribution running through it’s core. The film sets up like a classic British gangster flick but slowly it becomes clear a more sinister force is at play. The relationships between the three male leads is very convincing and is punctuated with some great dark comic moments.
For me the film really picks up pace as we are introduced to the presence of The Woodsman and The Acolytes, the drumming, powerfully provided by The Pentacle Drummers, adds a sense of impending doom and cultish ritual. The use of fire to highlight the faces of The Woodsman and Acolytes gives the scenes a dark ethereal quality. 13 Graves makes you take a different look at life, it’s possibilities and the consequences of choices people make and in the current climate that couldn’t be more relevant. I also love that this film is a folk horror which I always find particularly enjoyable and with other films in the genre also coming out this year, this film couldn’t be more on trend.
